Chapter Ten

Jane drove back to the Senior Corps of Retired Investigators office. Maybe her boss Flora would have some advice for her. She had to get better at tailing if this was going to be her life’s work.

Miranda was alone.

“Sorry to bother you.” Jane hovered by the door.

Miranda smirked. “Not bothering me at all.”

“Okay then, bye.” Her hand was on the door, but she didn’t know where to go. She wished she could hide in the office and pretend she was working. Pretend she knew what she was doing. “Um, any idea when they’ll be back?”

“The Wilson’s are out with one of the other detectives. You don’t know her.”

The smirk made sense now. Miranda was on the inside of this circle. Jane was not.

“They probably won’t be back until tomorrow.”

“Ah, okay.” Still, Jane hesitated. Go home and tidy up, maybe watch TV and read a book until Jake got back? What else was there to do? Tanya didn’t need her to clean. Sadie was impossible to find. Google was out of answers.

“Did you want to leave a message? I’m sure I can handle that, even though I’m not a detective.” Still, she smirked. Someday Jane was going to get to the bottom of Miranda’s attitude.

“I guess not…”

“But you’re lost and don’t know what to do without them” She did that thing where you straighten a stack of papers loudly against your desk. “I get it. We’re not all cut out for street work. I wasn’t. You aren’t. Not everybody can be Flora and Rocky. This is the Senior Corps of Retired Investigators, after all. A group of men and women who have spent their whole lives successful in the field, and love it so much they do pro bono work for a non-profit. It’s not a babysitter’s club.” She shrugged. “If you’re in over your head, best to find out now. The Wilson’s have a lot of great people in their Rolodex who would love to finish the job for you.”

Jane wished Miranda’s words had lit a fire in her and made her want to rally and succeed, but they only managed to make her feel tired. She stared at Miranda, her mouth slightly opened, and said nothing.

“It’s okay to fail sometimes. Shoot, I did, and look how much happier I am now that I recognized my limitations.” She flipped her long, thick, brown hair over her shoulder. “I’ll tell Flora you came by to see her.”

“Thanks.” The word squeaked out of Jane’s mouth against her will.

She had failed at being a missionary, failed at her relationship with Isaac Daniels, failed at Bible School. Was she failing at this now, too?

Was she destined to be the useless, idle wife of a rich man?

She sat in her car for a long time before driving home.

She’d probably fail at that, too. Hosting dinners was not easy. Hosting fundraising events was even harder. And who knew exactly what she’d be expected to do if she decided to commit to a life on the society pages.
